Its important to book your hotels far ahead if you intend to visit major Austrian cities like Salzburg or Vienna.
Expect to pay at least 100 euros per night for a budget room. Even so some smaller towns have just a limited number of accommodation options so its difficult to find affordable places to stay which can drive up prices in the countryside. Notes come in denominations of 5 10 20 50 100 200 and 500. We did not stay in any expensive places on any of the days.
