The Residence Permit Student is intended for nationals of third countries who have been admitted to study at a higher education institution in Austria. Residence permits are always granted for a specific purpose either to work or to study. Residences of over six months are governed by the Settlement and Residence Act Niederlassungs- und AufenthaltsgesetzNAG which regulates the issuance of residence permits for foreigners.

The application requirements will change depending on your type of residence permit. Austrian residence permit for EU citizens EUEEA citizens do not require any special permit to enter and reside in Austria for up to three months. If a visa is required for entry in order to collect the residence permit the application for a visa D must be submitted to the Consulate within 3 months of notification. Only residence titles residence permits and settlement permits can be renewed in Austria it is not possible to have a visa renewed.
